ERIE-LACKAWANNA
This page will cover the
Bergen County Line of the former Erie. Unlike the Mainline, this route is
all Erie.
After branching out across the Meadowlands, the Bergen County Line heads due
straight for the town of Rutherford.
This relatively new station/shack serves the area near
the new outlet centers in Secaucus.
In a view from the Route 3 bridge, this westbound NJT train crosses the
Meadowlands. Giants Stadium is just off to the left. You
can see the World Trade Center in the distance. The large brick building
is in Secaucus. February 1989.
Train 57 on its way to Port Jervis passes through Pascack Jct. Here,
the Pascack Valley Line heads north
to Spring Valley, NY. Also February 1989.
Train 1256 eastbound at Pascack Jct.
Rutherford station in 1982. Note the diamond mark on the wall to the
left. Erie sign or REA sign??
This is 'BJ' tower just west of Rutherford station. It is here that the
Bergen County line diverged from the original Erie main line.
When the E-L merged the State of New Jersey was building Interstate 80 across
the state and needed to get through Paterson. In a deal that combined
portions of the old Erie with former Lackawanna lines the former Erie main was
removed through downtown Passaic and the Lackawanna Boonton
line became the right-of-way for I-80.
In a photo from 1963, a former Erie RS-3 brings a two car train through
Passaic(?). Photographer unknown.
Another image from
1963 shows an Alco PA-2 on a work train. Passaic also??
There are several stations I will add in here over time .
Radburn station in Fairlawn. 1892.
This is the Bergen County Line station in Glen Rock. 1982. The
Mainline station is a very short distance west.
Two U34CH powered commuter trains make their stop in 1983.
Just a short distance north is the junction point of the two lines in
Ridgewood. In these two views from 1980,
two rush hours train operating with former Jersey Central RDC cars pass through
the junction. The 559 car was originally bought by the
Susquehanna Railway. I'm sure the passengers used to the newer Comet
coaches weren't very happy with these things.
They may not have liked the RDC's, but they were certainly better than the old
Stillwell cars. Shown here in an image from 1968,
RS-3 950 passes through Ridgewood Jct. Photographer unknown.
U34CH 4183 still in its dark blue and gray colors heads
west on July 11, 1983.
